It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often depict them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album came out of a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound toughness demanded a fresh approach – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The band's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international following.

Yet the sister act will forever be their top priority.

"We have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
