EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
