French authorities will start intercepting small boats in English Channel following British demands
French officials have consented to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and stating there currently "have no effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the migrant vessels at sea, but only before they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French police have infrequently acted to stop the heavily loaded boats leaving the shoreline because it is considered too great a risk to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we implement these methods this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to disable the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to slash the hulls of a vessel.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up asylum-seeking passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are presently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
