Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
