Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
