Trump's Progressive Alarm Misses Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
